Shlomo Mintz is an exceptional professional, whom we do not have to introduce anymore to our music lovers. This 50-year old violinist is considered as one of the very best and his example makes young violinists dream. This personality of high artistic quality will soon be again in Wallis, because he will present himself for the 6th time as the Artistic Director of the International Music Festival Sion Valais 2007, including a series of high quality concerts.

As President of the Violin Competition, that is attached to the Festival, he will give youngsters from ail around the world the possibility to present themselves in front of an exceptional jury.
 

Young ' Valaisans' opening concert

From August 16th to September 12th, Shlomo Mintz has engaged often booked artists, but also Valaisans people from the region), whom had had the opportunity to express their technical and excellent capacities, and also bringers of emotions.

'To put in talented artists of the region is a 'must", confïrms Françoise Gyps, coordinator of the Festival.

Therefore the opening concert is called 'Youngsters from Wallis'. It is the pedagogue Nicole Coppey, the initiator of this first encounter with the public. Eight youngsters between 15-23 year old, selected because of their talents, will be surrounded by their guest, violinist Nadja Nevolovitsch, laureate of the Competition in 2005 and winner of the Children's Jury Prize 2005.

Nicole Coppey, Director of the school 'Un, Deux, Trois Musiques', has foreseen an evening with a lot of surprises. Duo's, Trio's, Quartet, Quintet ensemble, will prove us that music is a way to exchange and enrich.

The programming is large, and among others contains Erkin*. 'We wanted absolutely to perform one of his works, we looked all around the whole world to find one of his scores, and finally we found one at his family, with whom we exchanged a warm and special communication', according to Nicole Coppey.

On the 4* of September Trio Nota Bene will perform works of Mendelssohn, Ravel and Brahms, in the church 'des Jesuites'. Lionel Monnet, Xavier Pignat and Julien Zufferey, three musicians, originally from this region, will show their excellent level.



Public competition

The Wallis people have the opportunity to follow the competition and to participate in listening to well-known artists of the future. The manifestation, that contains two rounds and finales, will be open to the public and the entrance is free. It will provide you the opportunity to discover different music pieces and listen to various works.

From the 16th to the 24th August, an international Jury, with Shlomo Mintz as President, will make a choice out of 21 candidates, selected out of more than 60 applications.

The children's jury and the audience can also make their choice after having heard the candidates. Among the candidates is Swiss Noëlle Griiebler, 24 years old, from Zurich. She has received her first lessons in music from her grandmother, and finished her studies with distinction last year at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

This young woman has won already various international competitions. Her choice for the competition contains works by Mozart, Waxman, Debuaay, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. CKE

Special moments

Warned amateurs and audience will have the opportunity to assist to one of the concerts, performed by Shlomo Mintz, in some different venues. The Gala concert, traditional the final concert of the competition, with the three first prize winners, will take place on Sunday, 26th of August. Accompanied by the Hungarian Dohnânyi Budafok Orchestra, under direction of the Maestro himself. According to the 'Reforme': 'No vanity, no egocentric, but the willingness to produce a music festival that honours the beauty of the world'.

Ulvi Cernai Erkin (March 14*, 1906, Istanbul/Turkey), Turkish composer. Studied in Paris with Jean & Noëlle Gallon and Nadia Boulanger. Professer at the Conservatory in Ankara from 1930, later Director (1949 - 1951). Conductor of the State Opera Orchestra. Member ofthe 'Turkish Five', first group of professional composers in Turkey. (Other members: Cemal Resid Rey, Ferid Alnar, Ahmet Adnan Saygun and Necil Kazim Akses). Erkin composed two symphonies and one Sinfonietta, a violin-and piano concerto, a Sinfonia Concertante for piano and orchestra and chamber music. Works for choir, traditional Folk music and songs.
